Bathroom Update
I sit down, I squirm and wiggle. I get up. I make tea, throw a load of laundry in, heat up my rice pack. I come back and sit and am still adjusting and fidgeting. I open my desk drawer. A disk with a green paper case looks back at me: ” Gavin’s skydive – June 30th, 2013. I debate if I should pop it in and reminisce on that day. No, I must practice discipline and write. But, it’s been so long. I don’t know where to pick up. I don’t know which projects should be promoted to being captured within the memory vault of this blog.
I set a timer – 45 minutes. Whatever I get down will be good enough. So, first off, thank you for being here. I know it’s been awhile. The days have been full. Full of both productivity and projects but also of learning when to rest.
Winter was hard in many ways and perhaps one day I’ll write about those cold months but for now, I feel blessed for answered prayers and better days.
The driving motivation for us currently is preparing our home and property for my aunt’s wedding, come the first weekend of July. It will be a special occasion as my brother has become ordained to serve as the minister for the ceremony. Extended family that have enjoyed gathering in the past with my grandparents at this home will once again return after nearly 30 years.
It’s been four years of working on this house, and three years to the day of living here. Gavin and I are excited about the progress that is starting to become more visible around us. The project I’m most passionate right now about is the bathroom. I had to look back to recall when we first began demo on it. February of 2019. Little did we know that we’d be ripping out the floor and using the space as an access panel to re-wire and re-plumb the entire home [thank you, Gavin & friends]. Now that has been taken care of, we are seeing light at the end of the tunnel! Trying to recount all of the steps it took to get there, however, exhausts my mind. So I’ll summarize with this:
- floor joists braced
- subfloor installed
- claw foot tub refinished
- German shmear on brick
- electric/plumbing run
- ceiling braced
- tongue & groove cedar planks installed on ceiling
- ceiling fan & light wired
- stained glass transom framed in
- holes in brick patched
Gavin did a great job installing the ceiling.
Drywall, heated flooring underlayment, self-leveling concreate, tiling, and bead board coming next, Lord willing!
